SC's Best Senior Living Referral Source

Colonial Gardens Alzheimer’s Special Care Center Ribbon Cutting

Colonial Gardens Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Assisted Living

On April 27th, 2015 the JEA Senior Living Family, had the official ribbon cutting to recognize their newest facility, Colonial Gardens Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, in West Columbia, SC. Unlike other Assisted Living communities in the area that offer both traditional assisted living, as well as a separated memory care wing, Colonial Gardens entire property and staff is dedicated to providing seniors with dementia, the utmost memory care possible. Each resident at Colonial Gardens receives a personalized daily care plan, with care tailored directly to the individual rather than to the disease in general. The staff members will work together with the resident’s family member with regards to making sure each resident has the best quality of life, in their given situation. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia.  (For a more detailed explanation of Memory Care options, click here.)

In honor of their ribbon cutting ceremony, Chris Pepper the Administrator for Colonial Gardens, graciously invited members from the Columbia, South Carolina area to come in and tour their community. They provided guests with tea, lemonade and light snacks. Tours of the property were held after the ceremony. The staff members were all very friendly and personable and the tour showed how well thought out the design of the property was. They had common areas equipped with cable TV, fireplaces and comfortable seating. Even though it is a secured facility, there was a secured outdoor courtyard that residents can visit when in need of fresh air.

To handle the transition from home to a community, JEA Senior Living Family has put in the effort and developed a program named Meaningful Moments, wherein they learn about the resident’s likes, dislikes and favorite memories. By knowing about each resident’s life experiences they are able to care for not only the physical and mental difficulties associated with dementia, but also care for the emotional toll that the disease reeks on the body. They take the resident’s life stories and add details and preferences into the resident’s daily routine to make them feel more comfortable in the community. The engaged and friendly staff members also help to provide familiar faces to the residents. Visits from the resident’s family members and friends are highly encouraged and in addition to visits from family and friends, many other activities are structured in to the resident’s life.  Residents enjoy movie nights, exercise, pet visits, arts and crafts classes as well as holiday celebrations to keep the resident’s as engaged as possible in the community. Friends and family members of the residents are able to take part in the activities as well.
